SOUTH WEST POINT

WEST POINT, Sept. 12, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- A New England couple are being sued by the state of Kentucky for allegedly promoting the use of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, a drug that's been used for many years to treat sexual dysfunction. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in the U. S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

The lawsuit, filed by Matthew James, 41, and Anne Elizabeth Blount, 32, against the makers of Viagra, claims that they "knowingly and fraudulently" promoted the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

"Sildenafil" or "Viagra" is a brand name for the drug, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It is used to help men with PAH. It works by relaxing the muscles in the blood vessels, which allows the blood vessels to dilate. This dilatation helps the blood to flow into the penis. The drug is a generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s "Cialis" and is approved for use in the United States as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

As the name of the drug is "Viagra", it's available as a generic. The lawsuit says the defendants were trying to "suffer from an underlying medical condition which made Viagra unsafe."

The suit claims the defendants "knowingly and fraudulently" promoted the drug to treat PAH. The claim was based on their "unfair and deceptive practices" and misrepresentations that the drug is for PAH only.

"Viagra is not a drug for erectile dysfunction," the suit states. "Viagra is the only drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED.

"Viagra is not a drug for the treatment of PAH. Viagra is the only drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED."

The lawsuit is being filed in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. A lawyer who filed the suit is expected to appear at the end of the year. The suit was filed on September 10, 2015.
